When the Kid Is Ill: Fever. Waiting For the Doctor

What should a Mom do when waiting for a doctor if her baby has a fever?

  • First of all, do not panic. If the kid`s temperature is more than 38 degrees C, you may give him some infant acetaminophen or ibuprofen to bring down your child's temperature. I usually use suppositories so that not to make harm to my kids` stomachs.
  • Besides, you should give your kid enough water to drink. Remember, a toddler should drink as much as 1.5 litre a day, but when he is ill the amount of water should be increased by half a litre. Don`t make him eat if he doesn`t feel like (which is very difficult for me, I always think that my daughter will starve).
  • One more thing you can do to help you child feel a bit better and to reduce his fever is sponging him down with tepid (lukewarm, not cold) water or giving him a lukewarm bath. This is highly recommended by pediatricians especially if the temperature will not decrease. But  never try to reduce a fever by sponging down your baby with rubbing alcohol. Rubbing alcohol can be absorbed into your baby's bloodstream through the skin. It can also cool him too quickly, which can actually raise his temperature.

P. S. Make sure you haven`t put on too many clothes on your kid. If it is too warm in the room and your baby is dressed warmly he may have a fever because of the clothes he has got on. So, take a layer of them off.
There is no need to reduce the fever if the isn`t more that 28 degrees C, let it fight the infection instead of trying to bring it down.
