Some days ago when cutting the cuticle off my fingers I damaged the skin around the nail and carelessly paid no attention to it. Now I understand that I should have at least washed the wound with some antiseptic liquid, unfortunately I hadn`t. And two days later I noticed an abscess at the nail which hurt me much. To tell you the truth I still haven`t seen the doctor. Hope I will not have to.
Here is what I found out and have already done to my finger.
An infection of the tissue at the side or base of the nail is called paronychia. It is quite common in children. Since it is a purulent infection it is better to consult the doctor as soon as possible for only a doctor can assess the situation and prescribe proper medicine.
You can try to cure paronychia on your own only if you will not be able to get to the doctor soon.
1. Do not dissect the abscess. The infection can spread so quickly that noone willl be able to help you later on (I didn`t follow this one. I made a small cut with a sterile needle as soon as there was a big yellow-coloured surface on the side of the nail and after I had soared my finger in salty water).

2. Prepare a lukewarm solution of a tablespoon of salt and soda. Add ten drops of iodine. Keep your finger in the solution for 15-20 minutes. The water will soften the skin, and the salt will draw pus out. (That really helps.)
3. If you are somewhere in the countryside look for a leaf of a foalfoot. Bind it around the finger. 12 hours later take the bandage off. You will see the pus on the leaf. Apply one more leaf. Carry on till the wound disappears. (I applied a piece of aloe leaf. A night was enough to draw the pus out and to stop the infection).
4. Antiseptic and resolvent ointments also help.
5. See to the fact that the situation doesn`t get worse. If it does go to the doctor immediately.
6. Take care of your fingernails and cuticles. Be careful when manicuring. Cleanse and disinfect any even the smallest wounds or cuts.
